Live @ Shimamoto

The first series of Live @ Shimamoto sessions were recorded at Shimamoto Sound between Jan. and March 2002. The concept for the project was to record a live improvisational album each week with a wide variety of different musicians. Each player would interface with a particular component of Shimamoto Sound and an album is then recorded in real time with each player improvising his own contribution. All the music was made up as they played. There are no redos or overdubs. Each 30-60 minute session simply goes straight to a 2-track recorder without stopping until it was over. The madness is mixed on the fly and each week a new unique album was born.

Shimamoto is a metaphorical character taken from a Haruki Murakami novel. She embodies the concept of pure and innocent first love beyond comparison. She is an icon of an idea so full of raw emotion that it lies beyond accurate words of desription and manifests itself differently to any individual that comes to experience it.

The studio at Shimamoto Sound is a physical manifestation of this concept of Shimamoto for music. It is a complex network of recording equipment, instruments, and effects that come to life when musicians interface with it. It is a place where individuals can explore their love for music and create new outlets for their musical ideas.
